LIFE HACK #1

MAKE YOUR OWN HUMMUS!

I'm going to start sharing some of my favorite LIFE HACKS with you! These life hacks are things that I have found save me a ton of money and I hope they help you do the same!

DIY HUMMUS RECIPE

1 can Garbanzo Beans (also called chickpeas)

1 Tsp Garlic or 1/2 Garlic Power

1 Tbsp Lemon Juice or Lime Juice

(Fresh is best but any you have on hand will work great!)

Salt and Pepper to Taste

(I usually use about 1/4 Tsp of both)

1/4 cup Liquid to help it blend smooth

(I've used water, almond milk and regular milk. They all work great and I really don't notice much of a change in taste with any of them. I'm sure you could also use soy milk, coconut water or anything else you have on hand)

***I've read lots of recipes and many call for an oil of some kind. I don't really feel it necessary to add oil. It's just adding extra fat to the recipe and I think it tastes really great without it. However, If you want a more mediterranean taste adding a bit of Extra Virgin Olive Oil will pair nicely with it. :)***

OPTIONAL INGREDIENTS

1 Tsp Sriracha Sauce

1/2 Tsp Cumin

1/4 Tsp Cyan Pepper (or more for heat)

Add anything else you want to flavor your hummus!

Avocado

Red Peppers

Cheese

Jalapeños

Olives

and anything else you can think of!!!

DIRECTIONS

Put everything in a blender or food processor and blend until smooth.

Cost Breakdown

At my local grocery store Hummus is $2.98 per container which is about 10 oz.

I calculated my own Homemade Hummus and it cost a whopping $.68 for a larger quantity of 16 oz.

My husband and I have chosen the FIRE lifestyle which means we are saving as much of our income now as we can so that we can be Financially Independent and Retire Early. I'm going to get a bit nerdy here with some calculations!

We typically eat hummus once a week because it's a great easy healthy snack. If we make it ourselves once a week that's $2.30 of savings each week and $119.60 of saving each year.

Now lets say we invest that savings each year in an index fund that gets and average 8% return. After 10 years we would have $1,990.80.

With the lifestyle we have chosen $1,990.80 will last us just over a month. Which means that by making our own hummus, such a simple thing, we are able to retire 1 month earlier than we planned!

Even if you don't eat hummus on a regular basis I would encourage you to look over your food budget and see if you notice something that you buy frequently. Most likely there is something that you could easily make yourself that would save a ton of money.

Now maybe you don't need to save money. Maybe your just trying to eat healthier. By making things yourself you can control the ingredients you use and the quantity of each ingredient.

I hope you enjoy this recipe and I hope this cost breakdown helps you with your own budget! Subscribe for more of my favorite money saving life hacks.
